How to Choose Outdoor Furniture for a Hospitality Terrace or Commercial Space
Outdoor spaces have become some of the most commercially valuable areas in hospitality. A well-designed terrace increases covers, extends trading seasons and creates the kind of shareable moments that drive organic marketing. But outdoor furniture for commercial use is a very different purchase to garden furniture for a domestic setting.
Here's what to consider.
Materials: what actually lasts outdoors in a commercial setting
Aluminium The gold standard for commercial outdoor furniture. Powder-coated aluminium is lightweight, rust-proof, doesn't require seasonal treatment and holds up to heavy daily use and British weather without issue. It's available in virtually any colour finish and suits everything from contemporary restaurant terraces to boutique hotel gardens.
Rattan (synthetic) Synthetic rattan — woven polyethylene over a powder-coated aluminium frame — is extremely popular for hospitality settings. It offers the warm, organic aesthetic of natural rattan without any of the weather-sensitivity. Quality varies considerably: look for flat-weave or round PE weave over a welded aluminium frame rather than steel, which will eventually rust at welds.
Solid teak and FSC hardwood Teak is the benchmark hardwood for outdoor furniture — naturally oily, resistant to rot and splitting, and capable of lasting decades. FSC-certified teak or other certified hardwoods are the responsible choice. The trade-off is cost and weight; teak furniture is significantly heavier than aluminium equivalents. For a permanent terrace or garden setting where furniture isn't moved daily, it's an excellent long-term investment.
Steel Heavy-gauge powder-coated steel is durable and gives an industrial or architectural aesthetic. It's heavier than aluminium and will eventually show rust at chips and welds if the coating is damaged, so it needs more maintenance in exposed settings. Better suited to covered terraces than open-to-weather environments.
What to avoid: Domestic rattan furniture with a steel core frame — it will rust from the inside out within two seasons in a commercial setting. Softwood furniture without proper treatment — it will split and grey quickly. Lightweight aluminium with thin, welded joints — it buckles under heavy commercial use.
Cushions and upholstery for outdoor commercial use
If your outdoor furniture includes cushioned seating, fabric specification matters. For a commercial hospitality setting:
-
Water and UV resistance — look for solution-dyed acrylic (Sunbrella is the industry benchmark) or polyester with a water-resistant finish. Solution-dyed means the colour goes through the fibre, not just the surface, so it fades far more slowly.
-
Mould and mildew resistance — particularly important in covered or semi-covered areas with poor airflow.
-
Easy clean — commercial outdoor cushions need to be wiped down quickly between covers. Avoid fabrics with deep pile or natural fibres in outdoor commercial applications.
-
Bespoke sizing — standard cushion sizes rarely fit non-standard furniture perfectly. A bespoke outdoor cushion made to measure will look significantly better and last longer than a generic alternative.
Volume and logistics
Unlike domestic outdoor furniture, commercial procurement usually involves significant quantities — enough to cover a full terrace, roof terrace or garden. This has implications for:
-
Stackability — for venues that clear and store outdoor furniture seasonally or overnight, stackable chairs and folding tables reduce storage requirements dramatically.
-
Lead times — commercial quantities often need to be ordered well in advance, particularly for made-to-order cushions or bespoke items.
-
Delivery — large volumes arrive on pallets. Make sure your delivery address can accommodate a pallet delivery or arrange offloading accordingly.
