What is contract-grade furniture?
Contract-grade furniture is designed and manufactured specifically for commercial and high-traffic environments. Unlike domestic furniture built for occasional household use, contract-grade pieces are tested and rated for continuous, heavy daily use by multiple people.
How is it different from domestic furniture?
1. Frame construction — Contract-grade frames are typically built from solid beech, hardwood, or heavy-gauge steel. Joints are reinforced, often with corner blocks, glue and mechanical fixings working together.
2. Foam and fillings — Commercial upholstered furniture uses high-density foam rated for sustained use — usually 35–45kg/m³ or higher.
3. Fabric and upholstery ratings — Contract fabrics are rated in Martindale rubs. For heavy commercial use, 100,000+ rubs is standard.
4. Fire safety certification — For upholstered seating in hospitality venues, care homes, offices and public spaces, CRIB 5 certification is required as a minimum.
Do I need contract-grade furniture for my venue?
