What Is CRIB 5?
CRIB 5 — short for Combustion Resistance Index and Burning behaviour, Level 5 — is the highest tier of fire-resistance testing required for upholstered furniture in UK commercial and public buildings. Defined under BS 7176:2007+A1:2011, it means a complete piece of furniture has passed a rigorous ignition test using a standardised wooden crib with a heat output equivalent to a small open fire.
Domestic furniture in the UK only needs to meet CRIB 3 under the 1988 Furniture and Furnishings (Fire Safety) Regulations. Commercial environments are held to a much higher standard.
Who Legally Needs CRIB 5 Furniture in the UK?
The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 places a legal duty on the responsible person to ensure all furnishings meet the appropriate fire-resistance standard. CRIB 5 upholstery is required in hotels, care homes, restaurants, offices, event venues, student accommodation, and any premises where the public has access to upholstered seating.
